Next in our series of posts about new Charitocracy nominees, we have nominee Peace Garden Project, nominated by donor Griffinan
. They work against -isms and phobias in the world while feeding people. They don't just grow food, they grow healthy community. You can find their web site here.
A few words on Charitocracy
Firstly, for newcomers: here's how it works. Donors pool their monthly contributions, as little as $1. The cause with the most votes each month wins the pot. No matter how much or how little you contribute, each donor at Charitocracy gets one vote. This is where charity meets democracy. So please share this post (see social sharing icons at top of post) and ask your friends to join us and vote! That's how we spread the word and, as a result, grow the monthly pot. The bigger the pot, the bigger our positive impact on the world!
About nominee Peace Garden Project
Seed Time
We plant seeds, but we don't just grow food, we grow hope. More than 42 million people in the United States are food insecure. Anyone is welcome to join us on our garden work days. Our work days are one of the primary ways that we build community. We plant seeds together, and work the land together. No one works alone, and all of the food goes to the community. If you come early on harvest day, you can also go home with a fresh loaf of bread baked by one of our interns.
Harvest Time
Join us on harvest day. The vegetables from our harvest go to families in the community that are in need. Individuals and families self-select. We want to remove the shame from being food insecure. Families can come and work with us on harvest day but this is not a prerequisite for receiving produce from the garden. Following the harvest and distribution, stay for Pizza! We will gather around tables and have vegetarian pizza while we learn about each other and continue our process of building community.
Access
We believe it is important for all people to have access to fresh food. Our produce is free from pesticides. Though not certified organic, we recognize the value of food being free from chemicals, pesticides, and other types of additives. We don't use any of these in the growing of our food.
