November 2020 winner Outer Banks Hotline

Charitocracy OBX's 2nd check to November winner Outer Banks Hotline for $500

We have good news about November winner Outer Banks Hotline, right after this quick update...

OBX monthly pot boosted to $500 by Jen Alexander!

Every cloud has a silver lining. Jen Alexander is our dear friend, Colington neighbor, and Charitocracy donor since the beginning. (Over 4 years ago?!) She was narrowly defeated in the Dare County Schools Board of Education election on November 3. As part of closing down her campaign, she chose to donate her residual campaign funds, over $900, to Charitocracy. She wishes the money to benefit the local community it came from. So the timing is perfect with our newly formed Charitocracy OBX!

With her funds, we'll top off each of the next several OBX pots to the $500 mark. I hope it will attract more OBX locals to donate and nominate their favorite OBX charities to chase that prize! Eventually we'll reach that $500 mark organically, but in the meantime, thank you so much, Jen. You flipped the script on your electoral setback and turned it into a boon for OBX nonprofits. ❤️

November 2020 winner Outer Banks Hotline

On Giving Tuesday we named Charitocracy OBX's 2nd monthly winner! Congratulations to Outer Banks Hotline, nominated by donor John Towler. They provide crisis intervention, safe house, information and referrals, advocacy and prevention education services. You can find their website here. Hotline is a precious staple of our community and I'm beyond thrilled to see them on our new OBX winners list.

Now you have a few more days to sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to winner Outer Banks Hotline.

Then take a moment to feel good about your part in our collective $500+ grant to help with Hotline's ongoing work!

Have a great December, stay safe, and be sure to log into Charitocracy OBX to update your votes or nominate a new cause!

A few words on Charitocracy

Firstly, for newcomers: here's how it works. Donors pool their monthly contributions, as little as $1. The cause with the most votes each month wins the pot. No matter how much or how little you contribute, each donor at Charitocracy gets one vote. This is where charity meets democracy. So please share this post (see social sharing icons at top of post) and ask your friends to join us and vote! That's how we spread the word and, as a result, grow the monthly pot. The bigger the pot, the bigger our positive impact on the world!

OUR SERVICES

Working together, Hotline’s well-trained volunteers and dedicated staff provide the community with years of crisis intervention experience in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault response, prevention education, support groups and community outreach. Programs and services are added and refined over time as needs are identified.

  • A variety of support groups to empower and educate survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, groups to address the issues of men who abuse their partners and programs for children who are affected by violence and abuse in their families.
  • Training and education for allied professionals, such as law enforcement, social workers, health care workers, child care providers, teachers and other interested groups. These trainings raise the community awareness of the many aspects of personal and domestic crises.
  • Outreach in the community and the schools through community leadership in providing resources for anti-bullying prevention, parent education, services for at-risk youth, emergency assistance for individuals in crisis and deliberate participation in community events and task forces addressing issues of compassion and safety.
  • A 24-hour crisis phone line (252-473-3366) that connects a distressed caller to a volunteer trained to listen and make referrals. Topics include suicide, family problems, depression, substance abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • A comprehensive domestic violence program that includes a safe house, advocacy, support and referral for victims and their children.
  • A sexual assault response program that provides the assault victim with a trained advocate at the hospital, during interactions with law enforcement and in court proceedings. Referrals for counseling options are also offered to the victim and family members.

October 2020 winner Outer Banks SPCA

Charitocracy OBX's 1st check to October winner Outer Banks SPCA for $100

We have good news about October winner Outer Banks SPCA, right after this quick update...

We have our first Charitocracy OBX winner!

It's official. The OBX pot is not big, but it has heart. We raised $100 for an OBX cause in our first month. That's not nothing! Can we make it bigger and better? Yes. Invite your OBX friends to join the fun! Every dollar helps local OBX charities, and makes Charitocracy OBX more fun by raising the stakes!

October 2020 winner Outer Banks SPCA

Halloween night we named Charitocracy OBX's 1st ever monthly winner! Congratulations to Outer Banks SPCA, nominated by donor bjstager. They are an open-admission animal shelter dedicated to caring for all the lost and homeless animals of Dare County. You can find their website here.

This is technically the SPCA's 2nd Charitocracy win, as they were the winner of Charitocracy USA's April 2018 pot, too. The Charitocracy OBX pot is still small, but will hopefully grow with time. This should at least help them put a brick on the sidewalk in front of their new shelter! Consider donating your own brick!

Now you have a few more days to sweeten the pot with a special one-time donation of any amount, which we'll add straight to the check we write to winner Outer Banks SPCA.

Say hello to Grace, the SPCA's pet of the week, and take a moment to feel good about your part in our collective $100+ grant to help with their ongoing work!

Have a great November, stay safe, and be sure to log into Charitocracy OBX to update your votes or nominate a new cause!
